Environmental Factors Impact Our Indoor Farm

by Olivia Wong

This video is of our supplier's recent wheat harvest. This wheat will go through a process whereby we get our wheatgrass seeds.

Although we grow wheatgrass indoors with LED lighting to simulate sunlight and irrigation systems in place of rain, we are reliant on traditional outdoor farmers for the seeds. All seeds which we use to grow sprouts and microgreens come from outdoor fields. There is an interconnectedness with nature.

Environmental factors impact our indoor farm, which we usually see in terms of quality and pricing. This year has been a tough one due to drought. Other factors they may face from time to time are floods, pests or disease, low yields, extreme cold or heat.

When we grow the sprouts, microgreens and wheatgrass, we may see these environmental factors result in low germination rates, discoloration, or other unusual results. Sometimes we receive comments such as, "well, you grow indoors, so why isn't it consistent?" What people don't realize is the stress the seeds experienced prior to being sprouted at our farm. Yes we can control growing conditions in our facility, but not mother nature.
